I’m a history teacher, writer, learning expert and innovator. I teach two days a week at an innovative school: UniC in Utrecht. Using concepts like- challenge based and connected learning, personal learning environments and networks, MOOCs, Flipped Classroom, game based learning and gamification- I’ve moved further away from traditional teaching. Using a variety of web 2.0 tools my goal is to create blended learning environments in which learning can take place anywhere and anytime.
I studied History of International Relations at Utrecht University. Afterwards I attended the Foreign Relations Course (Leergang Buitenlandse Betrekkingen) at Clingendael Institute for International Relations on a scholarship. After that I decided that I wanted to take up teaching and enrolled in the Bi-Lingual and International Teacher Training Programme (BITEP) in which I also taught in a secondary school in Mamelodi Township, Pretoria. I then moved on to teach in international and bi-lingual schools in the Netherlands
Besides teaching I’m also a blogger, writer designer and consultant. Amongst others I’m on the design team of a new teacher training institute and new educational ecosystem: The Dutch School.
I’ve been featured regularly in national press and on television. I was been nominated teacher of the year 2012. National magazine Vrij Nederland has nominated me one of the Netherlands 23 “New Radicals” (Nieuwe Radicalen) for my innovative teaching practice and my stance and activities on educational reform. Recently I edited an influential book called “Het Alternatief” (The Alternative) featuring articles from renowned scholars like Andy Hargreaves and Howard Gardner. An international version and a book on Blended Learning/Flipping the Classroom are in the works.
