Online meeting "Enacting pedagogies of discomfort and empathy: Some insights for navigating through ‘difficult conversations’ in the classroom"

This Big Conversation is about the potential and limitations of pedagogies of discomfort and pedagogies of empathy in anti-racist and multicultural education, especially in relation to ‘difficult conversations’ in the classroom—e.g. discussions about race/racism, migration, extremism, or nationalism.

Our guest speaker Zembylas draws on his long-time research, teaching, and policymaking experiences in Cyprus and elsewhere and discusses classroom examples that show the successes and failures of pedagogies of discomfort and pedagogies of empathy. Finally, he offers recommendations for teaching and teacher education.

Join Michalinos Zembylas, Professor of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies at the Open University of Cyprus, and Laurence Guérin, professor Global Citizenship, in this conversation on 11 February from 15.00-16.00 hrs.
